Last weekend I had an informal portrait shoot with actor Sy Richardson. The results are posted at http://photo.phui.com/.
I first saw Sy in Straight to Hell when I caught it at an art house movie theatre in Troy, NY the summer of 1987. He often works with the same group of actors and directors, and the result is usually a film I'd enjoy. So it's probably not a coincidence that I own no less than 6 DVDs that list him in the credits. Still, it was Straight to Hell that really let him shine in a featured role.
He is known for playing stern characters... the quiet, tough, malicious good guy. I wanted to try to capture some of that in the photo shoot. At the same time I wanted his own, more playful, personality to shine through at times as well. I think I got a decent blend of the two.
The session was very relaxed and we quickly established a good rapport. By the end of the hour we spent together, he was telling stories and paying no mind to the camera. So the last roll is basically a collection of candid shots of Sy as himself, while some of the earlier shots are the more posed character portraits.
I'm hoping this experience will lead to more opportunites like it. I had a great time, and think some good pictures were taken.
