Tonight I caught Jeff Goldblum playing keyboards with a small jazz combo. The band was really hot... mostly up-tempo, straight-ahead jazz with a couple of standards thrown in. During the second set, a few guest vocalists came up and did a song each. One was totally freeform and improvised on the spot. The expressions on Jeff's face were priceless. He was obviously pleased with the resulting song.

I brought my camera, but didn't get any shots. I make it a policy to always get permission from the band before I shoot, and when I asked Jeff during the set break, he said he thought there was a policy against it.

I left him a note with the photo.phui.com URL and my email address, in hopes that if they ever play a more photo-friendly venue, I find out about it. I'd really like to capture the whole band on film. The guitarist, in particular, seemed really expressive as well, at least musically (I couldn't really see his face from where I was sitting, but I could tell by listening, he's someone I'd like to get a picture of...).

Better luck next time. And if not? The music still smokes!!!
